The eTRV is the latest innovation in
automation
of Thermostatic Radiator Valves
(TRV). The eTRV replaces the head of your existing Thermostatic
Radiator Valve and provides you with both time and temperature control
of
your room, all set from the handy
remote
control included with the eTRV. The eTRV offers three
programmes each day that maximise the
savings on your energy bill. The manufacturer's tests suggest that a
25%
reduction in energy is a realistic possibility when you change from
your old TRV to the new eTRV.
How does the eTRV work?
- Unscrew the head of your Thermostatic Radiator Valve (don't
worry
- water won't come gushing out).
- Screw on the eTRV (adaptors are supplied to fit most common
valve
bodies).
- Insert the batteries (supplied).
- Set the times you want your room to be at the desired
temperatures using the supplied
remote control.
Operating the eTRV is simple, using the remote control handset
supplied. Large, clear
numbers, along with easy to understand instructions allow you to
program the eTRV with up to
three
cycles of temperature change per day.
Different cycles can be used for different days of the week (for
instance having higher temperatures or different timings on the
weekends to the weekdays).
Smarter and quieter
An old fashioned style
TRV
has one
temperature sensor which is supposed to detect the room
temperature. In reality it is also affected by factors such as whether
it is fitted horizontally or vertically and whether the valve is open
(so there is hot water in the pipe just underneath it) or closed (so
the pipe beneath it is cool). Unlike a conventional TRV, the
eTRV has two temperature sensors.
The top one senses the air temperature in the room while the second
sensor at the base senses the temperature near the radiator flow pipe.
The eTRV then calculates a temperature offset which results in a
far more accurate control of room
temperature than a conventional TRV.
One of the problems with motorised TRVs is that they can be noisy. The
manufacturer of the eTRV claims that independent tests have verified
the eTRV to be the
quietest
product
on the market
- the motor is hardly audible (though some noise will inevitably
attenuate through the radiator and pipework). Part of the higher cost
of
this product over comparable products is the need for the
higher specification motor
and
well engineered gears
that keep the
noise level to a minimum.
Compatibility
The eTRV fits to the valve body of your existing Thermostatic Radiator
Valve. If you do not have a TRV on your radiator you will need to get
in a plumber to fit one first. The eTRV is supplied with 28mm and 30mm
adaptors to
fit most
valve bodies
with those screw threads. The eTRV is
compatible with valves made by:
- Barlo
- Braukmann
- Drayton
- Honeywell
- Landis & Gyr DuoGyr
- Myson
- Pegler
- Regis (B&Q)
- Siemens
- and many others.
The eTRV suits both horizontal and vertical valve bodies.
The UK built eTRV continues to sweep up awards for its innovation and
ability to challenge carbon reduction. In November 2010 the eTRV
received overall winner in the Innovation Award category of the Energy
‘Buying & Supplying’ Excellence Awards beating Marks &
Spencer
and the Ministry of Defence.
